Houghton's Pond

Twenty-four acres in size and up to 42 feet in depth, Houghtons Pond is a spring-fed kettle hole pond formed by receding glaciers approximately 10,000 years ago. The Massachuseck Indians fished the pond and hunted the surrounding lands. From the colonial period through the late 1800's, several generations of the Houghton family farmed the area.

The swimming area is supervised by DCR lifeguards from late June through Labor Day, 7 days a week. The beach has a handicapped accessible ramp which leads to the water. All park visitors must follow the directions of the lifeguard staff at all times. Failure to do so will result in removal from the park.

        Du 4 Juillet 2006 au 13 Août 2006
July 4-August 13

This year's theme: Men and Beasts
Tags: outdoor, movies, film, cinema, gratuit, free, plein air, pelouse, gazon, lawn, crowds, la foule, picnic, pique nique

Map this on Platial

Cedar Street Park, aka Reverand Thomas J. Williams Park

This is a really well-designed park. The little kids' area is fenced and only has one exit, which has a nice table strategically situated right in front of it, where you can sit and work and stand guard at the same time. The larger park also has only one exit to watch, really. There is a back exit, but it's far away from the playground equipment and not very appealing to the kids. There's a good climbing structure, and water play in the summer. There are almost always kids here, even very early in the morning.

Another great thing about this park is that dogs are allowed and tolerated off leash when the park isn't crowded. There are poop-pick-up bags in the park and an area where you can throw a ball or stick.

Great park, great internet connection.

Carson Beach

This sandy beach, owned and maintained by the Commonwealth's Department of Conservation and Recreation, is one of the best swimming beaches in the area, with nearby public amenities and great views of the Harbor. New sand, new walkways, benches, lighting, shade shelters and award winning landscaping have helped to make Carson Beach a popular destination. The recently renovated Edward J. McCormack Bathhouse, one of the first facilities completed as part of the "Back to the Beaches" effort, has restrooms, changing rooms, showers, drinking water fountains, chess tables, and bocce courts. In addition, it hosts first aid and lifeguard functions. "Mother's Rest" and its fishing pier have also been rehabilitated, making for a beautiful picnic area with a fantastic view of the Harbor.

Angel Island

Angel Island was the Ellis Island of the west, but also played its part in one of our nation's uglier moments while implementing the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, becoming the location where racial profiling was used as part of interrogation techniques at the immigration station. During WWII, it was also used as a US Army POW processing center.

ngel Island is one of the most picturesque places in the bay, giving panoramic views of the city skyline and the bridges. A wonderful all day excursion with a stop over in Tiburon for drinks or lunch. You can bring your bikes on the ferry if you like. It's a about a 2 hour walk around the island. Ferry info is in the web link above.
Tags: tourist, hiking, picnic

Map this on Platial

Maramec Spring Park

Our stay in Missouri, was seasoned with lots of time outdoors. Camping, canoing, picnicing, and hiking were some of the diversions our family would enjoy. Maramec Spring was one of our favorite spots for cookouts and meandering. It was close enough that we wouldn't have to spend the whole day getting there. It is the site of an old Iron Works from the early 1800's, and a trout hatchery that still is in operation. On our way home from visiting friends in Chicago in July of 2008, we stopped at Maramec so I could share it with my wife. It is just as I remember it from 40 years ago. The unique blue shade of the water is still as magical and mysterious as when I was 8 years old.
Tags: picnic, history, parks, trails, trout, foundry, historical sites, cookout, iron works, trout hatchery

Map this on Platial
