I began making natural bath & body products in my kitchen in 2000 as a way to make family and friends homemade, practical gifts. Shortly thereafter, I began teaching classes. It seemed only natural for me to combine my passion for my new hobby with my training and love for teaching. I have a Master's Degree in Speech Communication from the University of Hawaii (which has nothing to do with making natural products, but I always knew I would end up teaching in some capacity).
I teach the following soap, candle and natural bath/body product making classes: lotions & creams, 3 types of body butters, bath salts & body scrubs, spa facial products, fresh facials from the fridge, lip balm, bath melts & solid salt scrubs, fizzy bath bombs & herbal tub tea, massage oils, body powders & milk baths, cold process soap making, hot process soapmaking, melt & pour soap crafting, eco-friendly candle making, natural baby products, and making natural perfumes. I occasionally teach similar classes for Foothill De Anza (FHDA) Community College and have taught for The Learning Annex, Juniper Tree Soap & Candle Supply in Berkeley, The Native American Cultural Center & The Berkeley Ecology Center.

In September 2003, I opened the nova studio in historic Point Richmond. the nova studio features my soap, bath & body, and candle classes as well as other innovative and creative classes with other Bay Area teachers. “My goal is to provide a creative space that encourages both students and teachers to find and share their passions with the community."

$3.5 Million Sinkhole :: Richmond, VA

60+ foot crater opened during Tropical Storm Gaston in August 2004. Work has begun to refill the crater, which swallowed street, sidewalks, and a few cars. Though rumors stirred that the sinkhole was a result of the Church Hill train tunnel collapse, it turns out it the area used to be a ravine (and the storm forced waters to run their natural, long-forgotten course).

Belle Isle Park

Belle Isle has had a storied past: native American village, Civil War POW camp, horse track, and industrial site. Now, it's a public park with many elements from its historic past... making it one of Richmond's most intriguing sites. This 54-acre expanse has always been there, but was made more accessible with the construction of a downtown pedestrian bridge about 10 years ago. To get there, you'll walk it--suspended above the raging Hollywood Rapids, and dangling from the interstate above. It sounds quite treacherous, but it's not. Once you're there, follow the path that heads south (parallel to the overpass). You'll pass (and be able to wander through) remnants of the park's industrial past: stone walls, steel frames, and even an entire hydroelectric plant. The ruins are what make Belle Isle truly unique; in an era of high liability, it's one of the few sites where you can legally wander through such abandonment. The trail leads around to the Rapids and past other vestiges of its life as a POW camp. Earthen mounds and defensive positions have worn down over time, but they're still there. Do be prepared to walk over some rugged terrain, especially if you opt to climb the hill in the center of the island. Wade out into the water at your own risk, since the Rapids are deceptively strong. And be sure to visit the bathroom before hitting the island, since bathroom facilities aren't available. Belle Isle is located across the James River from Tredegar Iron Works. To get there from downtown, go south on 5th Street, and hang a right when the road ends. Free parking is on your right, under the railroad trestle and before the Ethyl Corporation parking lot.

The Byrd, which opened in 1928, is one of America's true movie palaces. Seating about 1,400 patrons (both downstairs and balcony) the theater features intricate plaster mouldings, polished marble walls, and a tremendous crystal chandelier. The theater shows mostly second-run movies for $1.99 (the price was just 99 cents until recent years) and occasionally hosts other events (like the annual VCU French Film Festival). On Friday and Saturday nights, theater patrons can hear Bob Gulledge play on "the mighty Wurlitzer organ"--the only one nationally played on a regualr basis, aside from the one at Radio City Music Hall in New York. Weekday patrons get to enjoy the litter PSA, shot in the 1980s at the Byrd... which could well hold the record for most-played PSA anywhere.

Home Brewing Company tunnels

Few people know that Peter Stumpfs operated a brewery on Church Hill around the late 1800s, and that there are still brewery caves UNDER Chimborazo Park. Unfortunately, the entrance is well-buried. During WWII they were actually going to be used as a bomb shelter for residents of Church Hill, in case of Nazi bombers.

From VTunderground.com's Mike: "When I was growing up in Richmond, I always heard stories about tunnels running under Capitol Square. Supposedly they connected the state Capitol building with the Govenor's Mansion, and even ran all the way to MCV. MCV students would even hide cadavers down there, if the old legends are to be believed. Well, the tunnels are real, I've explored them. I have a pile of photos, I just can't post them on my website (for obvious reasons). They do connect the Capitol and the Govenor's Mansion, as well as a lot of other buildings in that area. And they DO run to MCV. Actually, I've seen the master tunnel map, and the tunnel network is VERY extensive. Security is tight, of course, including locked gates and security cameras. No cadavers though."

Red Oak Victory Ship

The Richmond Museum Association has as its mission the preservation and restoration of the SS Red Oak Victory as an operational vessel. The SS Red Oak Victory, a National Memorial Ship, will be developed into a maritime museum focused on the wartime contributions of the residents and workers of the City of Richmond and the shipbuilding ingenuity of Henry J. Kaiser.

As an operational museum the SS Red Oak Victory will provide a unique perspective on the history-making achievements of the City of Richmond and the Richmond Shipyard workers. As a community resource, the vessel will be a site for local events, service to the children and youth of the community and an intriguing family recreation and entertainment destination. Celebrate the Fall season with a pick-your-own glass pumpkin and Fall vegetable harvest in the nation's most unusual garden created by glassblowers Molly Stone and Michael Cohn, co-owners of Cohn-Stone Studios. Rather than picking vine-ripened pumpkins, harvesters can select from hundreds of individually created hand-blown glass pumpkins, Fall vegetables and leaves, 'planted' throughout the lush Mediterranean garden, in sizes, shapes and colors that even Mother Nature couldn't imagine. The public is invited to stroll through the garden 'picking' vibrantly colored glass pumpkins, squash and acorns or 'rake up' Fall leaves tucked into succulents, lavenders and sages, passion and grape vines, rock gardens and redwood, olive, palm, persimmon and pomegranate trees.

Pumpkin lovers can also watch the artists create glass art by blowing and swirling, dipping and cutting dangerously molten liquid glass, tour the artists' studio, enjoy light refreshments and talk with Molly and Michael about their passion for gl

Ken's Birthday Dinner

I took Ken and his wife Carolyn to Mongolie Grill in Richmond for Ken's birthday. I thought I was getting off easy, but Ken managed to put away about 3 pounds of meat. Monglie is a pretty good Mongolian grill all the way around. Lots of interesting ingredients (the Bison was great).
