Whalom Park

        "You'll have a whale of a time".
Whalom Amusement Park was/is located in Lunenburg MA, which was only about a half hour from where I lived for most of my life. It's closed down and falling apart now (since 2000), but I went there multiple times pretty much every year when I was a kid. For a youngster, this place was really cool...though outdated by modern standards, it was perfectly adequate for chills and thrills back in the day...and with the lack of safety standards in those times, it was even better!
I've got my marker right in the middle of the Black Hole roller coaster...which is one of the few things still standing there...it actually still looks to be in good shape, though I know that it's no longer operational. Some of the other highlights from Whalom's history was the Pirates Den ride, which unfortunately burnt down. The funhouse was one of the coolest I'd ever been in (they don't make em like that anymore) it was DARK in there, with all sorts of trippy spooky blacklight paint and strobelights and all manners of weird stuff in the walkways; spinny and squishy floor tiles, ricketty bridge, ramps, and even a rotating tunnel for little children to fall over in. Other rides included The Whip and Tilt-a-Whirl...and various other old timey bygones.
In 2000, when the park was at the end of it's rope, I went there with a few friends a couple times since it was only 3 bucks to get in after 6pm...we rode the roller coaster nonstop for about an hour once. A few weeks later, the park's gates creaked shut for the very last time.
The grounds are still there though...on quiet summer nights you can sometimes here the faint sound of ghostly children squealing with glee in the dark.... woOOOooOOoo!!!!!!!
Tags: whalom park, ruins, abandoned

Map this on Platial

The Shit Castles

One of a series of old industrial ruins that hug cannery row in Monterey, CA. This is the most accessible of them in that access doesn't require hopping any fences or climbing any walls. To get there, follow Prescott down to the beach, then turn to the right and walk about 200' to the end. "The Shit Castles" was the place's name when I lived in the area in the early nineties, but it's possible and even likely that whatever teenagers are using it for drinking and smoking pot now have dubbed it something else. Until a few years ago, there was archeological evidence of multiple generations of heshers, with "Led Zeppelin Lives" spray painted next to "Slayer!" but sadly, whoever owns the property has white washed the walls since then.
Tags: industrial, wasteland, ruins, urban, monterey ca

Map this on Platial
Named because of the concrete pilings that look like enormous, capital T's, this ruin is a bit harder to get to than the shit castles. TYRE, Lebanon, July 20 -- The warning came in the morning Thursday, a recorded message dialed to phone numbers in southern Lebanon. In flawless Arabic, it instructed: Leave now, beyond the Litani River that bisects the rock-studded wadis of the south. Don't flee on motorcycles or in vans or trucks. Otherwise, you will be a target. The message signed off simply: "the state of Israel".

Under the nopo trainbridge, lies this sinking abandoned, turn of the century wooden barge. I actually don't know one bit of history on it, but it's obviously either been ship wrecked here, of was the first of a one ship boat graveyard. It is a thrilling place to risk tetnus, scurvy and radiation poisoning, all in one sitting.
Tags: abandoned, beach, boat, climb, river, shipwreck, sneak.in, train.bridge, sneak in, barge, ruins, toxic wasteland

Map this on Platial

Dining with an Economist

I took Richard Mudge, an economist from Delcan's DC area office, to dinner at Monsoon last night. I haven't been there since my parents visited last fall.

So we went and loaded up.

The menu is here.

Our take from it was the stuff squid, the spare ribs, the cognac filet mignon, a special crepe made with coconut milk, and the mustard greens with abalone mushrooms.

Monsoon is always phenomenal.

Oh, I should note since I said I took Mr. Mudge here that he was quick to pick up the check.
Tags: monsoon, seattle, washington, squid, ****, ruins

Map this on Platial
We tried this place when we lived in Capitol Hill and the wait was too long at Kingfish (which we ultimately didn't like that much) across the street. Service is consistently inconsistent, but the food is always great. Must get the spicy drunken chicken (you can get this in sandwich form at their sandwich shop - Baguette Box - in south Capitol Hill) and most of the vegetable dishes are good too (although we didn't love the green beans). Whenever we see Eric we beg for him to put the seafood chow mein back on the dinner menu. We keep meaning to try their dim sum brunch.
Tags: restaurant, capitol hill, vietnamese, ruins

Map this on Platial
