Berry Pond

There is a great bicycle map available from Pocket Rides showing how to get to this pond from the Ballardvale T station.

Berry Pond is the area's day use facility, and is open Memorial Day to Labor Day. The pond has a sand beach and new washhouse with flush toilets and changing stalls set against a beautiful backdrop of trees reflected in the surface of the pond. Lifeguards are on duty from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily. Grills and picnic tables are available for anyone wishing to picnic at Berry Pond.

Lorraine Park Campground, located about 2 miles from the Headquarters on Jenkins Rd., contains 91 sizeable campsites that are spread out sufficiently to provide a real "forest" camping experience. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a grill, and although no electric or water hookups are available, the bathrooms do have hot water showers. Camping is offered mid-April to mid-October; office hours are from 9am-9pm.
Tags: swimming, water, swim, swimming hole, picinic, state forest, hiking, fishing, trails, showers, horseback riding, mountain biking, canoeing, trailer, accessible beaches, accessible camping, accessible restrooms, hunting restrictions, picnicking, skiing crosscountry, r.v., walking trails, camping

Map this on Platial

Piscine Keller / Swimming Pool

Keller pool is 50m long. If you are out to swim, swim, swim, and swim some more, then this is the pool for you. Just don't get into the fast lane if you can't keep up. There are serious swimmers here.

This pool also has a sauna where you can go to relax after your swim.

This isn't the exact exact location, but the river that connects the weeki wachee spring with the gulf of mexico is home to families of huge gentle amazing manatee (sea cows). You can rent canoes and go upstream to see all kinds of great floridian wildlife, like otter and turtles. Get in the water (chest depp mostly) and go pet the manatee who will mostly just come right up to you. The scars on them are mostly from careless motor boat drivers going too fast and crashing into the not so agile prehistoric animals.
Tags: swim, florida, animal, water, boat, canoe, nature, manatee, great memories, weeki wachee

Map this on Platial

The Pagoda

Though many Bedfordite youth say "bagoda," they really can't be blamed. The Japanese themed folly that once graced the rocky shores of this semi-man-made lake is just a pile of rotting wood now. The term now refers to the lake itself which, with its proximity to the old railroad bed and Lane Elementary school (but no roads) makes it a popular destination for kids and those wishing to avoid road-bound vehicles like mom's van and police cars. Our entire third grade class once went swimming here and nearly got our young teacher fired. One of my favorite hideouts.
Tags: pond, lake, japanese, bike, trail, bmx, railroad, smoking, drinking, hideout, bedfordite, swim, ick, pagota, buhler, horse trail, kevin dougherty, runaway, hide

Map this on Platial

We Camped Somewhere Around Here

It's not a bad drive from Portland to Timothy Lake. We went on a Saturday morning, getting a fairly late start, so it took us a while to find a campground with a spot open.

You have some nice views of Mount Hood along the drive. Vigo drew a great picture of a sunset over Mount Hood. Here's a picture of it:

Once we found a camp site we pitched our tents and went to the lake for a little swim. There were a lot of people in the lake, swimming, fishing, and boating. It would be preferable to camp on the East side of the lake because that side gets sun on the shore longer than the West side. The water was pretty warm. There were salamanders and dragonflies and frogs and ducks and chimpunks around the lake.

The ground was very dry and the kids kicked up a lot of dust. They were pretty much covered in dirt except when they were swimming or sleeping.

We managed to clean them up enough for lunch and supper and bedtime, but apart from that we let them go around looking like they'd been raised by wolves.

Vigo caught a frog for the first time in his life. We found a spot on a path in the woods that seemed to be a favorite of little brown and green tree frogs. They were all over the place, and pretty easy to catch. Very cute, too.

The whole camping area is full of chipmunks who are fairly tame. They're just waiting for you to get four or five feet from the picnic table so they can hop up and snag some food. They're cute, but at the same time kind of gross, leaving chipmunk turds all over the picnic table after their sunrise scrounging.

I woke up a few times in the night. A couple times I heard some kind of wild canine in the far distance making whining barkish calls. Cayotes or wolves, I suppose.

The kids had a great time roasting marshmallows and Vigo did a great job helping me collect firewood and make the fire.

We did some shadow puppet theater on the side of the tent with Jason, Di-Ann, Emiko, and Tabor. Just before going to bed we caught a toad and made a shadow of him on the side of the tent for our friends.

Di-Ann learned how to skip stones and Emiko figured it out, too.

Vigo was a bit envious because he couldn't quite get the knack of it. Emiko is also a pretty great frisbee thrower.

We had a great weekend and a really nice, long talk all the way home on Sunday night. I love it when vigo gets into a talkative mood.
