I'm turning 35. To celebrate, I'm inviting a few close friends to a 100% silent dinner and walk/surprise by Jason.

He says "GATHER, MINGLE AND CONGREGATE SANS SOUND. GET USED TO SCRIBBLING ON SHEETS OF PAPER, AND LETTING YOUR EARDRUMS RELAX"

WHEN: THURSDAY MAY 3rd, 2007 6:30-9

WHERE: TAO OF TEA (2112 NW Hoyt)

BRING: YOUR OWN SPECIAL NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION TREATS; paper, chalkboard, pens, gentle sound makers or ideas.

Please RSVP.

With a start-up and two small children, Silence has been an impossible desire...until now. Plus it will be dramatic, fun and surely memorable.
"Those who know do not speak; Those who speak do not know." (Lau Tzu)

Silence of protest, respect

Note: I almost lost my voice twice in the past few months and recently lost it altogether for 4 days!

A cool and unusual Cafe, DT-UT offers a wonderful gathering place for the stroller set and for parents with young children. The long, deep space, with vintage overstuffed armchairs and sofas pushed back against the walls or in open clusters, offers plenty of room to manoeuver strollers or for toddlers to move around. The style might be described as a cross between your living room and the set for a Cocteau movie.
Rembrandt's Coffee House

Everyone always went here, but I always thought Rembrandt's was overrated. If you wanted great tea and coffee, go to Grayfriar's. If you wanted atmosphere, go to the Mudpie. If you want pretension, go to Rembrandt's.

Still, the area around Rembrandt's is really pretty. There is a great vista and a romantic little Italian-y villa fountain nearby!

World-class botanical gardens includes cactus garden, Australian garden, Japanese garden, roses, herbs, Shakespeare garden and much more. Chinese garden coming soon! The tearoom (reservations recommended) is wonderful, though not as charming as it was before Sodexho took it over. (My advice: Dim the lights! Put some music on!) Great art collection, library (for scholars) and gift shop. A wonderful way to spend a relaxing day. Visiting this convinced me that Southern California was actually a pretty place the first time I saw it over 20 years ago. Don't miss the new Children's Garden, even if you don't have kids. It's full of whimsical plants and water creations.
Tags: garden, gardens, san marino, pasadena, museum, museums, botanical, roses, australian, chinese, tea, restaurant, art, cacti, cactus, japanese, tearoom, cafe, restaurants, gifts, books, bookstore, giftshop, children, kid, kids, childrens

Map this on Platial
An old school English Tea House. Every table is ornately decorated with proper napkins, tea spoons, English tea service and flowers. Classic tea service includes finger sandwiches, scones, pastry and a pot of tea per person.

Not only this but there is a hat room where guests can choose a hat for properly enjoying tea and a kids Alice in Wonderland area where guests can select the gloves and necklaces of their choice.

It's a dreamy, fun place that feels not like a theme restaurant but an authentic step into your own Wonderland run by a majestic proprietress which in an ageless but old fashioned way guides your journey like a combination grandmother, governess and spirit guide.

Emiko was precious in her thorough and concentrated enjoyment in white veil, white gloves and adornments and so was I in my white hat with floral arrangement, veil and yellow gloves.
Tags: tea party, tea, tea house, alice in wonderland, scone, newport

Map this on Platial
Good Morning, Glory! Some of the good folks of Ceasar Cafe: Edith, The Great Mario, and Joan.
_____________________

If you've lived in the City for awhile, you've probably enjoyed one of Joan and Sam's fine homey coffee shops. They were on Valencia near New College at one time and that's where I first came to depend on them for my morning jolt.

Now they're further up Valencia, still serving up a decent meal for a fair price--in fact the menu is pretty robust and even tastier these days. I was impressed by the generous girth of my breakfast crepe and would have happily shared halfsies with a friend.

Salads, bagels, sandwiches, caffeine, whatever keeps ya going, get it here.

Madame Hatter's Tea Room

No matter how old you are, it's hard to resist a great trunk of fancy dress-up clothes. That's why it is not uncommon to find grown women and little kids rummaging side by side through the impressive vault of hats, boas, jewels, and purses in the vault at Madame Hatter's in Eudora. Fun is definitely the theme at this Tea Room, and finding the right outfit in which to have your tea is central to the experience.Read more.
Tags: children, tea, kids, restaurants, families, dressup

Map this on Platial

The Best Coffee in Apex

I've never been much of a coffee connoisseur (had to look up the spelling of that one) but I'm now officially spoiled. No more Folgers for me, damn you Geoff!

If you love or even like coffee you've got to check out this little shop in Apex. It blows the crap out of Starbucks. I still like Caribou quite a bit but it's just too far for me to drive every day.

Geoff (the owner) has done a great job here. He has free wireless, doesn't mind folks sitting around all day. This is actually my office outside of the home office. He always has a unique fair trade coffee served in the mornings and his mochas are outstanding. I had to slow down on them as I was gaining a "little" weight ;-)

If you're in the area, check them out. You won't be disappointed.
