Main train Station Podebrady, Czech Republic

This is the main station in Podebrady, Czech Republic.

The historic Spa town Podebrady is located at the river Labe, 40 km in eastern direction from the capital Prague, near the highway E67.

The town, surrounded by woods and nature parks, has a beautiful place for bathing in the sea, tennis courts and a riding-hall where riding horses can be rented. You can also experience a ride through the town or the green parks in a carriage. For health trips through the colorful surroundings, you can use the marked biker paths. At the colonnade, concerts of the symphonic orchestra, chamber recitals and concerts of wind orchestra take place.

In the year 1905, an exceptionally strong spring with healing mineral water has been discovered in the courtyard of the Podebrady castle. Since 1908, heart, circulation and blood vessel diseases have been treated in the carbon bath with iron-containing water.

Main train Station for Ceska Skalice, Czech Republic

This is the main train station for Ceska Skalice, Czech Republic. The history of Česká Skalice reaches back to the beginning of the 13th century and includes also many disasters that happened throughout the time. The most famous battle fought between the Prussian and Austrian armies close to the town took place on June 28, 1866. This battle is commemorated by a number of graves and memorials to soldiers killed in the combat. The name of Česka Skalice is closely connected with Božena Němcová - a famous Czech writer, especially with her childhood and her novel "Babička" (The Grandmother). The Dahlia Celebrations that were once attended by young Božena Němcová became the most important cultural and social events of the Czech National Revival period in the 19th century. You can visit the Dahlia Show and many other events held in the Božena Němcová Museum and the Textile Museum even today.
Tags: train, station, ceska skalice, czech republic

Map this on Platial

0009 walk stop 1 - train explosion

site where freight train derailed, slid into the river, broke a gas main and spark a huge explosion and 100 ft tall fire pillar.
I have video footage of the blaze from the nest bridge south, the Burnside, that I need to dig up to post here.
" An Albina-Lake Yard transfer derailed on the curve at Naito Parkway Dec. 14, 1999. It broke an adjacent natural gas valve, and the resulting fire threatened to overheat the Steel Bridge structure, causing it to lose stability. Portland firefighters successfully cooled the steel until crews secured the broken gas line."

" Union Pacific freight train derails, ignites gas pipeline fire in Portland

PORTLAND -- A three-alarm fire closed a downtown Portland bridge to cars and MAX commuters Tuesday night and caused residents to flee an apartment complex after a freight train derailed and ignited a natural gas pipeline, the Portland Oregonian reported.

Burning natural gas fueled a stubborn plume of fire for nearly three hours, with heat that firefighters estimated at up to 2,000 degrees.

The blaze lit up the Old Town area on the north edge of downtown at about 8:30 p.m. The fire was extinguished at 11:20 p.m. after the 16-inch gas line was shut off. No injuries were reported and the extent of damage was not immediately known, firefighters said.

One Union Pacific railcar -- apparently carrying grain -- plummeted into the Willamette River and three other railcars were destroyed, firefighters said. Five cars of the 50-car train derailed.

More than 120 firefighters responded to the explosion and fire.

Residents of the nearby McCormick Pier Apartments poured into the streets, and firefighters closed surrounding streets as a precaution.

The Steel Bridge was closed to all traffic, and MAX riders on both sides of the river were put on buses and rerouted.

Whether the bridge would remain closed this morning to cars or MAX commuters wasn't known Tuesday night.

Portland Fire Bureau spokesman Neil Heesacker said firefighters sprayed water around the billowing flames to protect the bridge and nearby structures. The structural integrity of the steel on the bridge is threatened by temperatures beyond 1,000 degrees.

Because it was fueled by natural gas, firefighters let the fire burn off gas escaping from the line.

Firefighters said it was unclear why it took NW Natural Gas nearly three hours to shut off the gas line. A gas company spokesman said crews had to dig into the street to find a shut-off valve.

John Butz, who lives in the neighborhood, said the explosion turned the sky bright orange above the river. He said he saw the railcar go into the river and could feel the intense heat from the flames a considerable distance away.

The cause of the rail accident wasn't known.

MAX trains that use the Steel Bridge were stopped at the Rose Garden on the east side of the river and at First Avenue and Yamhill Street on the west side.

Tri-Met used 11 buses to shuttle passengers between the two stops. In addition, Tri-Met rerouted eight bus lines that normally cross the Steel and Broadway bridges.

If the MAX cannot cross the Steel Bridge, Solberg said he expected the rerouting from train to bus for MAX commuters would continue today."

Train Station from Washinton Park to the Oregon Zoo

It was pretty exciting taking the little train to the zoo. It was kind of pricey, but it's the sort of thing you spring for once in a while when you're on vacation. They have three trains which run every 15 minutes until about 5:30. You can either go all around in a loop, or do like we did and take half the loop to the zoo, then the other half later to get back to the park.

The train ride is really only interesting as a train ride. You can't really see animals. It's not like a safari train or anything. You drive through an area where they keep machinery and old train parts. You drive behind the elephant exhibit.

The nicest part of the ride is through the woods. There's a beautiful, steep ravine off one side of the train.

You go through a little tunnel when the train pulls into the zoo. That's a nice touch.

Odessa Beach

Sure, there are some great cafes in the town, but when the air gets thick with fumes (and it does) there's only one place to head - the beach. Several cafes here, and to be honest, one's as good as another. Prices aren't too bad - beer's cheaper than coffee, and ice-cream's a steal.

Great views however you look at it - still a working port up the beach, and still the beach where Muscovites flock to spend their time and money.
Tags: train, cafe, coffee, beach, ukraine, russia, odessa, flaneur

Map this on Platial

Cafe Bedetti

This might seem an odd one to add, but here's the thing: Falconara Mma is the railway station where the line splits for various places - Rome, Venice, Bari... And while you're waiting for your connection, where better to sit than in the 50s gloom and general Italian dodginess of Cafe Bedetti opposite the station?

In its heyday, the local hoods and ladies of transitory years and repute would command the back, while the front was devoted to reasonable coffee and... wait for it... world gold medal winning nougat and ice-cream. Really. Year after year they won the prize for 'World's best Torrone'. And I want to testify to the authenticity of that award. Truly a slice of bygone Italy, all while waiting for your train.
Tags: ice cream, train, cafe, coffee, italy, europe, station, ancona, nougat, torrone, mafia, falconara, fifties, dodgy

Map this on Platial

Ashtabula Train Wreck

This tragic event is the origin of the nearby Haunted Chestnut Grove Cemetery, where many of the train accident victims are buried. The accident was caused largely by the collapse of the railroad bridge. Legend states that the ghosts of the victims return to the bottom of the bridge on the anniversary of the disaster.
Tags: wreck, train, ohio, ashtabula

Map this on Platial

Swipe your credit card - Flytoget will keep it for 10 years!

Oslo's hi-speed airport train shuttle is the most important train in Norway. For passenger's convenienve, you can just pull your credit card through a reader at the entrace & exit doors instead of getting a ticket from the machines (see http://www.flytoget.no/nor/Reiseinfo/Billettl%C3%B8se-reiser). If you need a bill for your files, you can log on, add your personal data to the credit card number, and access your recent travels.

So I asked for the - nonexistant - privacy policy and the data handling procedures for my movement and credit card profile that is accumulated at Flytoget's data base.

They store all transactions for 10 years, is the bottom line. Not that their advertising flyer mentions data storage at all. Oh well.

Here's the e-mail I got from Flytoget:

Dear mr. XXX,

Thank you very much for your enquiry regarding Flytogets data processing and privacy procedures.

Flytoget operates in accordance with internal policies and statutory regulations, to ensure the integrity and confidentiality of all data.
We are currently working on a policy statement that will be published on our websites.

To answer your questions:

Flytoget does not share customer data with 3rd parties.

Time of travel is retained for up to 10 years for accounting purposes.
This includes information about the credit card used for payment. Only receipts for travels made during the last 12 months are available on flytogetkvittering.no.
The connection between credit card number and e-mail address is retained for as long as you keep an agreement with Flytoget. When you delete your account at flytogetkvittering.no, or remove a credit card from the account, the link between card number and e-mail is deleted and the receipts on flytogetkvittering.no are deleted from your profile.

You may at any time request your travel information by logging in at flytogetkvittering.no or by contacting our Customer Support.

Regards,
Flytoget AS
