Libby claims to have attended medical school for one year before deciding to become a clinical psychologist.

The reasons for her being institutionalized in the first place are still unknown, and whether or not her claims to being a clinical psychologist are true is also a mystery.
Tags: crazy, tv, lost, mystery, libby, hurley

Map this on Platial

Insta-Color TV

In 1962 there was only one tv channel in Sweden, and it broadcast in black and white. The station's technical expert, Kjell Stensson, appeared on the news to announce that thanks to a newly developed technology, all viewers could now quickly and easily convert their existing sets to display color reception. All they had to do was pull a nylon stocking over their tv screen, and they would begin to see their favorite shows in color. Stensson then proceeded to demonstrate the process. Reportedly, hundreds of thousands of people, out of the population of seven million, were taken in. Actual color tv transmission only commenced in Sweden on April 1, 1970.
Tags: tv, funny, hoax, museum of hoaxes, gullible, color tv, nylon, pantyhose, credulous

Map this on Platial
I was at home by myself. Erik called from work to tell me, and I turned on the TV. I couldn't believe it. I poured myself a drink. I watched the news for about an hour and then turned off the television. Every person I knew in France called me to express their sympathy, which I remember felt strange to me at the time. Unlike many Americans, I didn't feel as if I had been personally attacked. I just felt dumbfounded by the horror.

Church Where Charlie Confesses

St. Paul's Mission, Queen Emma Square, Honolulu, HI
Photo by Ryan Ozawa of The Transmission

Lost Season 1, Episode 7, The Moth, finds Charlie in a confessional booth where Charlie confesses to giving in to the temptations that come with being a rock star. Charlie is prepared to abandon his dreams when he is confronted by his brother who advises him that the band has just been signed to a large recording contract. This begins Charlie's downfall into the culture he wanted to avoid. Charlie soon becomes a heroin addict.

The scenes inside the church and in the church courtyard were filmed at St. Paul's Mission (Episcopal/Philippine Independent Church) on Queen Emma Square in Honolulu. This is located next to the Episcopal Cathedral Church of Saint Andrew.
Tags: tv, lost, church, confession, charlie, filming locations

Map this on Platial

Pool and Waterfall Where Kate Finds the Case

n the same Lost Season 1, Episode 12 - Whatever the Case May Be, we find Kate and Sawyer wandering through the jungle of the mysterious island and coming across a beautiful pool and waterfall. As they dive into the pool, they soon discover the bodies of several passengers of Flight 815 at the bottom. Also there is a case that the marshall escorting Kate back to the mainland had carried onto the plane.
Kate quickly recognizes the case and the battle of wits begins between Sawyer and Kate to gain possession of the contents. We later learn that the case contains several pistols and also the small toy plane that has long been the object of Kate's obsession.

This scene was filmed at one of the most recognizable locations on Oahu, Waimea Valley Audubon Center formerly known as Waimea Falls Park.

Located on Oahu's North Shore, this pool was once used as the site for daily diving shows. The once highly commercial park is now an Audubon Center with hundreds of acres of strolling paths and hiking trails, world class botanical gardens, and rich archaeological sites.

The Waimea Valley Audubon Center is located at 59-864 Kamehameha Highway east of Haleiwa on Oahu.
Tags: tv, kate, lost, sawyer, filming locations

Map this on Platial

Walkabout Tour Company in Australia

Photo by Ryan Ozawa of The Transmission

When asked for a favorite episode from Season 1 of Lost, many viewers select Episode 4 - Walkabout. John Locke, as portrayed by actor Terry O'Quinn, has one of the show's most interesting and mysterious back stories. Frustrated by his job at a box company where he is constantly belittled by his supervisor for his interests in war gaming and survival training, Locke dreams of more adventurous things. Tired of being told what he cannot do, Locke books a trip to the Australian Outback where the participants will hike through this difficult terrain. Upon his arrival in Australia, he is advised by the tour company that he cannot participate in the tour. We learn for the first time that Locke is actually a paraplegic and the company cannot insure his safety. He is sent home angry on the doomed Flight 815. Much to his surprise he discovers that after the crash he has regained the use of his legs. The scenes at the tour company in Australia were filmed at what was at the time a vacant retail space at 1 North King Street in Honolulu. It has since been leased to McClain's Auctions. The screenshot of this is taken from the inside of the building looking outwards. Ryan Ozawa has provided us with the photo above taken on the day of filming looking from the outside of the building in.
Tags: tv, lost, australia, locke, walkabout

Map this on Platial

Shrimp Truck in Australia

The character of Sawyer, as portrayed by Josh Holloway, is one of Lost's most complex characters. As a child, named James Ford, he witnesses a con artist swindle his family out of their life savings, prompting his father to murder his mother and then commit suicide out of grief. Young James vows revenge upon the con man but instead finds himself sucked into the same lifestyle to the degree that he even takes on the name of the hated con man, Frank Sawyer.
In Lost Season 1, Episode 16 - Outlaws, James is told by his former partner Hibbs that the man who ruined his family and his childhood, the same man from whom he took his alias Frank Sawyer, was in Australia operating a shrimp truck. James travels there and kills him only to find out he has been set up and the man he killed was not Frank Sawyer at all.

These tense scenes at the shrimp truck were filmed on Oahu's North Shore just east of the Turtle Bay Resort. Here you'll see the Famous Kahuku Shrimp Truck sitting on the ocean side of the road. Owner Kyung Ku, in business for 10 years, prepares her Kahuku shrimp dishes tempura-style and even with western barbecue sauce. This is the only place that advertises a choice of whole, head-on cooked shrimp. The Famous Kahuku Shrimp Truck is open daily from 9:30 a.m.-7 p.m. and, yes, Mr. Ku is quite alive.
Tags: tv, lost, sawyer, filming location, shrimp truck, roadside food stand

Map this on Platial

Jack's Wedding

Episode 20: Do No Harm is an episode that raises many more questions than it answers. It is a back story about Jack. We learn that Jack has saved the life of a woman named Sara in an automobile accident and in the course of her recovery they have fallen in love and intend to be married. Whether Jack and Sara are actually pronounced man and wife has not been answered. Nor do we yet know what has happened to Sara since Jack never has mentioned her on the island, nor does he wear his wedding ring.
The location where their wedding was filmed was at the world famous Kahala Mandarin Oriental Hotel, located at 5000 Kahala Avenue just east of Diamond Head.
Tags: wedding, tv, lost, jack, filming locations, do no harm

Map this on Platial

Sydney Airport

The Sydney Airport is an important location for numerous scenes in the first season of Lost. It is, of course, from here that Flight 811 leaves on its doomed flight to Los Angeles.
Instead of traveling to Sydney, Australia, however, Lost utilized the beautiful new Hawaii Convention Center as its set for the Sydney Airport.

The glass-front center opened in 1998 and features bold architecture, a $2 million Hawaiian art collection, and features such as a rooftop tropical garden, glass-encased meeting rooms and outdoor function spaces lined with giant palm trees. The architects of the design/build team - Loschky, Marquardt and Nesholm; and Wimberly, Allison, Tong and Goo - gave special attention to the idea of relating the building to its Waikiki environment and Hawaii's history and culture.

Volunteers conduct tours through the Center for groups of 10 or more by appointment only.

One-hour tours can be arranged on Wednesday and Thursday at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. You can, however, usually walk into the foyer area and escalator area where scenes from Lost were filmed.

The Hawaii Convention Center is located at 1801 Kalakaua Avenue in Honolulu right near the border of Honolulu and Waikiki.
Tags: tv, airport, lost, convention center, filming locations

Map this on Platial
This same wooded area near the Turtle Bay Resort is also the site of the banyan trees which have been used several times in the filming of Lost.
It was here where in Episode 11 Charlie is strung up in the tree by his neck by the mysterious Ethan. Kate is able to cut Charlie down and Jack is finally able to resuscitate him.

It is also here where in Episode 14 Walt is trapped inside the banyan tree as a giant polar bear lurks outside. Only with the help of Michael, his father, and Locke is Walt rescued. Michael eventually plunges the knife into the polar bear's neck, injuring it and forcing it to flee.
Tags: tv, lost, filming locations, banyan tree

Map this on Platial
Having found the plane's cockpit Jack, Kate and Charlie watch as the pilot is sucked from the plane by the "monster", Jack, Kate and Charlie flee into the jungle as they try to make their way back to the beach.
They are actually running through a heavily wooded area near the Turtle Bay Resort where numerous other scenes are filmed for Lost.

The Turtle Bay Resort is located near Oahu's most northerly point. You can drive northeast from Haleiwa on the Kamehameha Highway or approach it from the other direction where it is about 10 minutes past the Polynesian Cultural Center in La'ie.

If you're not a guest at the Turtle Bay Resort, you may be asked to pay a fee to park. There is a security gate that you must pass to reach the resort. They can't refuse you entrance since all beaches in Hawaii must have public access. Past the golf course and tennis courts to the left, you can spot the horse stables. After you park you'll want to head in that direction and follow the markers for the west/green trail which will take you through numerous filming locations for Lost.
Tags: tv, lost, filming locations, rain forest

Map this on Platial

Roots Tops Ratings

1977/02/03. This was the eighth and final night for the miniseries based onAlex Haley's Roots: The Saga of an American Family (1976). This final episode achieved the highest ratings ever for a single program. It was one of the most popular shows in the history of American television.

Although his parents were teachers, Haley was an indifferent student. He began writing to avoid boredom during voyages while serving in the U.S. Coast Guard (1939–59). His first major work, The Autobiography of Malcolm X (1965), was an authoritative and widely read narrative based on Haley's interviews with the Black Muslim spokesman. The work is recognized as a classic of African American literature.

Haley's greatest success was Roots: The Saga of an American Family (1976). This saga covers seven American generations, from the enslavement of Haley's African ancestors to his own genealogical quest. The work forcefully shows relationships between generations and between races. Roots was adapted as a multi-episode television program, which, when first broadcast in January 1977, became one of the most popular shows in the history of American television and galvanized attention on African American issues and history. That same year Haley won a special Pulitzer Prize. A successful sequel was first broadcast in February 1979 as Roots: The Next Generations.

Roots spurred much interest in family history, and Haley created the Kinte Foundation (1972) to store records that aid in tracing black genealogy. Haley later admitted that his saga was partly fictional.
Angels in America

"Angels in America" is based on Tony Kushner award-winning play. It is about AIDS, conservative politics, history, relationships, religion, identity (ethnicity, race, homosexuality), love, forgiveness, survival and transcendence. The plot focuses on two trouble couples, one gay, one straight. Their fates quickly become intertwined as the "upheaval" of the story developed. The script is written with beautiful dialogues and the language is stimulating. The production and acting are superb with Al Pacino and Meryl Streep being extremely powerful and moving. It won the Emmy for Best Mini-series 2004; 4 in the actors categories and 12 in total.

It's overwrought with sadness, pain, and profound loneliness. But it's a profound human dimension or existential experience. You'll end up saying: "More Life. Let the great work begin."
Tags: tragedy, tv, play, new york city, aids, angels in america, tony kushner, mike nicoles, al pacino, meryl streep, emma thompson, justin kirk, ben shenkman, marylouise parker, patrick wilson, spectacular dialogue

Map this on Platial

The Swiss Spaghetti Harvest

On April 1, 1957 the British news show, Panorama, broadcast a segment about a bumper spaghetti harvest in southern Switzerland. The success of the crop was attributed to an unusually mild winter. The audience heard Richard Dimbleby, the show's highly respected anchor, discussing the details of the spaghetti crop as they watched a rural Swiss family pulling pasta off spaghetti trees and placing it into baskets.

"The spaghetti harvest here in Switzerland is not, of course, carried out on anything like the tremendous scale of the Italian industry," Dimbleby informed the audience. "Many of you, I'm sure," he continued, "will have seen pictures of the vast spaghetti plantations in the Po valley. For the Swiss, however, it tends to be more of a family affair."

The narration then continued in a tone of absolute seriousness:

"Another reason why this may be a bumper year lies in the virtual disappearance of the spaghetti weevil, the tiny creature whose depradations have caused much concern in the past."

Dimbleby anticipated some questions viewers might have. For instance, why, if spaghetti grows on trees, does it always come in uniform lengths? The answer was that "this is the result of many years of patient endeavor by past breeders who succeeded in producing the perfect spaghetti."

And apparently the life of a spaghetti farmer was not free of worries: "The last two weeks of March are an anxious time for the spaghetti farmer. There's always the chance of a late frost which, while not entirely ruining the crop, generally impairs the flavor and makes it difficult for him to obtain top prices in world markets."

But finally, Dimbleby assured the audience that, "For those who love this dish, there's nothing like real, home-grown spaghetti."

Of course, the broadcast was just an April Fool's Day joke. But soon after the broadcast ended, the BBC began to receive hundreds of calls from puzzled viewers. Did spaghetti really grow on trees, they wanted to know. Others were eager to learn how they could grow their own spaghetti tree. To this the BBC reportedly replied that they should "place a sprig of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and hope for the best."

To be fair to the viewers, spaghetti was not a widely eaten food in Britain during the 1950s and was considered by many to be very exotic. Its origin must have been a real mystery to most people. Even Sir Ian Jacob, the BBC's director general, later admitted that he had to run to a reference book to check on where spaghetti came from after watching the show.

The prestige of the Panorama show itself, and the general trust that was still placed in the medium of television, also lent the claim credibility. The idea for the segment was dreamed up by one of the Panorama cameramen, Charles de Jaeger. He later said that the idea occurred to him when he remembered one of his grade-school teachers chiding him for being "so stupid he would believe spaghetti grew on trees."

One of the most popular episodes of Lost is Season 1, Episode 12 - Whatever the Case May Be. This is a Kate back story and shows the lengths she will go to in order to gain possession of the contents of a safety deposit box. The contents turn out to be a little toy plane that she and her childhood love buried in their youth and later dug up when Kate was fleeing the authorities.

In this episode Kate, played by the beautiful Evangeline Lilly, enlists the aid of several men to stage a bank robbery with her sole goal being to obtain the contents of the safety deposit box. The bank scene was filmed in the Chinatown Branch of First Hawaiian Bank at 2 North King Street in Honolulu. It is known for its old-fashioned teller stations.
Tags: tv, kate, bank, lost, robbery, filming locations

Map this on Platial

Seoul Gateway Hotel

Lost Season 2, Episode 5: ...And Found includes a back story of Jin and Sun, the Korean couple. Jin-Soo Kwon as portrayed by actor Daniel Dae Kim is the son of a rural fisherman. He seeks a better life for himself than what his father has had. After finding no room for advancement from the positions of busboy and waiter at the Asiana Hotel in Seoul, he applies for a job at the Seoul Gateway Hotel.
Jin is hired as a doorman, but given strict instructions that this is a respectable hotel and he is not to admit anyone "like him" into the hotel.

After what amounts to just a few hours or perhaps days on the job during which he had a chance encounter with his future wife Sun who was exiting the hotel after a lunch date, Jin makes the mistake of admitting a man and his small son who desperately needs to use the bathroom. When berated by his employer and instructed to find them and throw them out of the hotel, Jin quits his job and goes for a walk.

Filming for the hotel scenes took place at the Royal Garden at Waikiki at 440 Olohana Street in Waikiki. Our good friend Cynthia Rankin of Hyatt Hotels in Hawaii spotted the filming which was near the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Resort and Spa and let us know about it. Our ace correspondent Ryan Ozawa then took the photo above.
Tags: tv, sun, lost, hotel, jin, filming locations

Map this on Platial

Park Where Sayid and Essam Play Soccer

Lost Season 1, Episode 21: The Greater Good, we later find Sayid has infiltrated the terrorist cell but still does not know their target or where they are storing explosives stolen from the U.S, Government. We pick up Sayid and his old friend Essam playing soccer in what appears to be a part in Sydney, Australia. You can clearly see the Sydney Opera House in the left of the scene. Sayid soon learns that his friend has been chosen to die as a martyr delivering the explosives to their target in a truck bomb. Sayid is now faced with allowing his old friend to continue with the plan and possibly die or losing Nadia forever.
The park in this scene is actually the grounds of the Hawaii State Capitol Building located at in Honolulu's central historic area directly behind the 'Iolani Palace. The actual scene was filmed on the grassy area in the southwest corner of the grounds. If you stand in the grassy area and look towards Richards Street, you'll find many of these buildings. If you look closely at the screen capture linked to below, you'll see that many of the buildings are actually part of the Honolulu skyline.
Tags: tv, lost, soccer, sayid, filming locations, greater good, essam

Map this on Platial

Sydney Mosque Where Sayid Finds Essam

Lost Season 1, Episode 21: The Greater Good, is an emotionally charged episode that includes a back story of Sayid Jarrah as portrayed by actor London-born Naveen Andrews. It also provides for two wonderful Lost locations located just a short distance apart.
Sayid is obsessed with locating childhood friend, Nadia. As a communications officer in Saddam Hussein's Republican Guard he was, nevertheless, assigned to interrogate Nadia who was suspected of some crime. After being ordered to kill her, he instead arranges for her escape.

Several years later Sayid arrives in Sydney presumably in search of Nadia. He is taken into custody by the CIA and ASIS. They are looking to locate a terrorist cell. Sayid denies any terrorist involvement. He soon learns that the authorities want his help in exchange for helping him find Nadia. It turns out that one of the members of the cell is Sayid's old roommate at Cairo University, Essam Tazir.

Later in the episode the scene switched to a mosque at time of prayer. Sayid sees his old friend Essam across the room and approaches him after prayer is finished.

The mosque scene was filmed in the Laniakea YWCA at 1040 Richards Street in Downtown Honolulu. Built in 1927, this building's Spanish, Colonial and Mediterranean flare well suit the architecture of a mosque. The building's architect, Julia Morgan, also designed Hearst Castle in California.
Tags: tv, lost, ymca, sayid, mosque, filming locations, greater good, essam

Map this on Platial

                    INSTRUCTIONS

1) Get up off of the couch
2) (but bring the remote control with you)
3) Go to the south west corner of 3rd and Arch
4) Use your remote to activate the park

        9 September – 21 October 2006*

        Gallery Joe Bird Park
        3rd and Arch Streets
        Philadelphia, PA

At the installation site, pressing buttons on any (TV, DVD, VCR, audio, etc…) remote control triggers a myriad of responses ranging from subtle (bird calls or soft sounds emanating from hidden speakers, changes in the ambient lighting) to bombastic (more dramatic sound effects, explosions, strobe lights, or projected images). Each key press generates a unique combination of effects. Viewers may bring any remote control from home to activate the installation.
Tags: tv, nature, streetart, art, gallery joe, sound, interaction design, philly, remote

Map this on Platial

ZTOHOVEN Hacks Live TV Broadcast

Statement made by art group ZTOHOVEN

We are neither a terrorist organization nor a political group, our aim is not to intimidate the society or manipulate it, which is something we witness on daily basis both in real world and in the world created by the media.
Whether the reasons are political interests, market interests, financial interests or interests of supranational companies – we meet hidden manipulation and attempt to invade the subconscious mind of citizens with specific products or ideology, using all available means. We do not think that a subtle distortion of such system or an appeal to pure common sense of people and their ability to remain unaffected are harmful, not even in a democratic society. That is why, several years ago, the art group “Ztohoven” penetrated the public sphere of Prague, questioned the space given to advertisement generally and the space given to specific adverts. On the 17th of June 2007 this group attacked the space of TV broadcasting. It distorted it, questioned its truthfulness and its credibility. It drew attention to the possibility of using images of the world created by the media in place of the existing, real world. Is everything we see daily on our TV screens real? Is everything presented to us by the media, newspapers, television, Internet actually real? This is the concept our project would like to introduce and remind of. We believe that even the free space of public service broadcaster is able to endure such action and such impeachment. We hope our action will become an appeal for the future and remind the media of their duty to bring out the truth. Thank you for independent media and free space for our society.

Tags: czech, video, tv, weather, art, ZTOHOVEN, hacking, subversive media

Map this on Platial
