This is one of the best Goodwill stores I have ever know. It is huge. It is friendly. The people who run it are really nice and the people who work there are friendly and don't seem to hate their jobs passionately as is sometimes the case in a Goodwill or Salvation Army. Every once in a while I get a lucky yarn score here, though rarely do I see needles.
Tags: treasures, clothes, videos, find, reuse, nice, shoes, toys, junk, used, friendly, kids, books, yarn, knitting, thrift store, goodwill, records, kitchen stuff, dishes, silverware, fatima, dig, rummage, goldmine, wonderful, great music, slim pickins

Map this on Platial

"The Best of Blondie," 1981

When I finally got the tape recorder I'd been pining for for months and months, it came with "The Best of Blondie" on tape. Lucky me! I still love this record.

Debbie Harry. Now there was someone a girl could look up to. She was especially appealing because my cb handle when I was a little girl was "Blondie," and I never really could identify with anything about Dagwood's wife.

Indeed, this was a better Blondie for me.
Tags: lucky, music, funny, fun, wonderful, perfect, good luck, blondie, great music, best of, luck, debbie harry, tape, tapes, cassette, tape recorder, mp3, rapture, terrible rap

Map this on Platial

"She's So Unusual" by Cyndi Lauper, 1983

In the Cyndi Lauper / Madonna scission of the early 1980s I was firmly and unshakeably in the Lauper camp.

My favorite song from that album was "She Bop," because it reminded me of Betty Boop. When I later found out that it was a song about masturbation, well, I loved it all the more.

Cyndi kind of lost me with "Time After Time." I still hate that song. It's just grating as hell.
Tags: crazy, fun, dancing, wonderful, unusual, the cyndi lauper madonna scission of the early 1980s, girls just want to have fun, outrageous, mp3

Map this on Platial
Relief set in when I arrived at this charming retreat complete with patio swing and rose bushes in abundance and opened the door to my room with balcony overlooking the tuscan pool. Chocalte chip cookies on arrival (Too bad I couldn't indulge).

My arrival followed a communications breakdown between Orbitz who sent me confirmation on my room at the OTHER hotel and the HOTEL proprietor who insisted he never received it and was now sold out. For an hour I listened to them bicker until I was pointed in the direction of my new main stay in the Valley which for the record is the same price as the cheap Place I usually stay in that feels cheap and depressing.
Tags: roses, candy, pool, wifi, cookies, wonderful, feng shui, villa, red cottage, pastoral, lstanford, patio swing

Map this on Platial

Bob Dylan, starting some time in 1988

I discovered Bob Dylan at about the same time as I discovered the Columbia Record and Tape Club. The two went so well together. Those old albums were cheap to get, from the back of the catalogue.

I listened to only Bob Dylan during several different phases of my life. My passion for Bob only waned some time in my 20s.

I'm not sure I can even say for sure why this music meant so much to me. I was unhappy a lot during those high school years, and this music helped.

When you're 16, you spend a lot of time thinking about the meaning of things. The opacity of some of Dylan's lyrics was an ideal ground for that yearning to dig for meaning.
Tags: beauty, comfort, misery, wonderful, important, teenager, sadness, adolescence, mp3, angst, solace, words, lyrics, crutch, life preserver, meaning

Map this on Platial

Cedar Street Park, aka Reverand Thomas J. Williams Park

This is a really well-designed park. The little kids' area is fenced and only has one exit, which has a nice table strategically situated right in front of it, where you can sit and work and stand guard at the same time. The larger park also has only one exit to watch, really. There is a back exit, but it's far away from the playground equipment and not very appealing to the kids. There's a good climbing structure, and water play in the summer. There are almost always kids here, even very early in the morning.

Another great thing about this park is that dogs are allowed and tolerated off leash when the park isn't crowded. There are poop-pick-up bags in the park and an area where you can throw a ball or stick.

Great park, great internet connection.

The Fearsome Samurai Warrior.

[August 31, 2004] One night, there was the Fearsome Samurai Warrior.

This little boy, seven or so, put a cardboard box on each foot, two more on his arms, and another over his head, with a hole cut out so he could see. He had a pair of plastic samurai swords. He stood out in one of the roads, and would stay still until someone walked by him. Then, sometimes, he would scream like a pterodactyl and attack them in a fury of blades, or follow them with one sword. Sometimes he'd go down into a crouch, with his swords over his head. "I do this when I'm really angry."

He did this for three hours. Maybe longer.

By the end of the night, all of us from the booth were following him around, and just watching. Someone put a hat out for tips. The kid must have made $10, $15 by the end of the night. We also discovered that we could learn his secrets if we gave him money. For a dollar, he told us his name was Brian.

His mom finally came to drag him away after midnight.

"Mom, just so you know, I'm not leaving until everyone at the Fair is gone."

"No, actually you're leaving now."

A security guard walked over while we were watching him. "I told that kid to be careful, or somebody's going to lose an eye." He pointed at his face -- and we saw that he had a patch over one eye, and a big smirk.

He showed us his replacement eye, which is made out of coral rather than glass. The muscles in his socket have actually grown to surround it, so it tracks like his real eye. He lost it in a fishing accident: His son went to cast, and the hook went right in his eye. It was on Father's Day.
