Description:
One of the few border crossings between Mexico and New Mexico, Columbus was attacked and partially burned by Pancho Villa's army in 1916, in response to the U.S. supporting the Carranza regime in Mexico, and to the U.S. selling defective bullets to Villa. This marked the first time since the War of 1812 that U.S. territory was attacked by another country. A punitive search force was dispatched into Mexico by the U.S. in response, but they never found Villa.
