The Fairmont Empress is beautiful and romantic to look at from the outside. The walls are dripping in ivy and the location is perfect, right along the harbor. However, staying here is a less than romantic experience. I've heard the Signature rooms and suites are roomy and worth the high price tag, but as a lowly budget traveler in 1998, we had the basic double, which was almost like a standard Motel 6 room. Step into the Empress lobby to soak up the history, try the afternoon tea, or wander their garden, but you'll find nicer places to sleep for a whole lot less. If you do stay here, make sure to try the tiny swimming pool in the basement. It's claustrophobic, but has a very turn of the century feeling of elegance to it. Expect to pay between $150 to $500 a night.
