Brooke was someone I used to see while we were out walking our dogs. One day when she was walking in front of my building I finally asked her for her number, and I called a few days later and left her a voice-mail message. She never called me back. A few days after that I was out walking my dog, and she was talking to somebody on the front terrace of the building next door to mine. I walked by on the sidewalk and she didn't so much as look in my direction.
