Description:
I woke up during my sophomore year at Whitman College in a hurry to get to a meeting with my academic advisor that morning. When I got to her office she was startled to see me, and she explained that something had struck the World Trade Center and perhaps 50,000 people had been killed. We never discussed what we had originally planned to, and I forget what it was now. After seeing her I went to the old Student Union, and found the place packed and completely silent as other students and faculty just gaped and gasped as the the first tower began to collapse and the second plane hit. Everybody was already commited to the speculation that this involved Muslims, so when I went to my first class, which was history of Islamic civilization I expected my professor to address the morning's spectacle. He was late though and in such a hurry that morning he never got news of the tragedy. So he simply apologized for being late and taught the class as if nothing had happened which made that class feel very cold and eerie. Students complained that same day, and the next day he explained his experience and let students vent.
