Description:
You can swoon over the moon and take in the view of the city lights.
Residents are invited to pitch a tent in Bommer Canyon on Saturday and Sunday.
Twice a year, the city’s Open Space Land Preserve offers family campout weekends at the old Irvine Ranch Cattle Camp in the heart of Bommer Canyon.
On Saturday and Sunday, Irvine residents may spend quality time with family and friends in a rustic setting, almost as close as their own backyard. Bommer Canyon is located off Shady Canyon, and is adjacent to the Turtle Rock Community Park and Nature Center. It’s an important preservation area for many local plants and wildlife, including several endangered species.
Equipped with a volleyball court, horseshoe pit and fire ring, Bommer Canyon provides a picturesque surrounding for family outings. According to Amy Litton, senior naturalist and lead staff/coordinator for the holiday campouts, it’s a great time to be had by all.
“We offer campers a safe, supervised experience close to home. Campers are invited to use the group barbecue (charcoal provided), participate in evening and morning hikes, create a craft, enjoy an Open Space slide show, and make S’mores by the campfire while singing campfire songs,” Litton said.
And if campers don’t want to do any of the above, they may sit back and listen to the birds or play horseshoes or volleyball.
Families may begin pitching their tents at 3 p.m. Saturday for an overnight adventure, complete with campfire songs and stories, docent-led nature walks, and a slideshow featuring native wildlife, plants and history of the camp.
