Description:
[August 31, 2004] One night, there was the Fearsome Samurai Warrior.

This little boy, seven or so, put a cardboard box on each foot, two more on his arms, and another over his head, with a hole cut out so he could see. He had a pair of plastic samurai swords. He stood out in one of the roads, and would stay still until someone walked by him. Then, sometimes, he would scream like a pterodactyl and attack them in a fury of blades, or follow them with one sword. Sometimes he'd go down into a crouch, with his swords over his head. "I do this when I'm really angry."

He did this for three hours. Maybe longer.

By the end of the night, all of us from the booth were following him around, and just watching. Someone put a hat out for tips. The kid must have made $10, $15 by the end of the night. We also discovered that we could learn his secrets if we gave him money. For a dollar, he told us his name was Brian.

His mom finally came to drag him away after midnight.

"Mom, just so you know, I'm not leaving until everyone at the Fair is gone."

"No, actually you're leaving now."

A security guard walked over while we were watching him. "I told that kid to be careful, or somebody's going to lose an eye." He pointed at his face -- and we saw that he had a patch over one eye, and a big smirk.

He showed us his replacement eye, which is made out of coral rather than glass. The muscles in his socket have actually grown to surround it, so it tracks like his real eye. He lost it in a fishing accident: His son went to cast, and the hook went right in his eye. It was on Father's Day.
