Description:
In July of 1903 a mob overtook city hall to kidnap John Metcalf, a black man who allegedly shot and killed a white man ealier in the evening outside of the bar. After beating, dragging, and hanging him, this is where he was eventually brought and set on fire. The site has changed drastically since then, but at the time it was accross the street from the Vermilion County Jail.
