In July of 1903 a mob overtook city hall to kidnap John Metcalf, a black man who allegedly shot and killed a white man ealier in the evening outside of the bar. After beating and dragging him, he was hanged in this location. Eventually he would be taken across the street from the County Jail and his body would be burned.
