When the attacks actually happened, I was in Oakland Cemetery taking pictures of the Austell mausoleum for a historical article that was going to appear in the magazine I worked for at the time.
As I drove from the cemetery to the photo lab where we got all our film developed, I started hearing reports about planes having crashed into the World Trade Center; I was listening to the popular local rock station's morning show and I remember thinking at the time that that was a pretty tasteless joke to be playing on people. Only when I got to the photo lab did I realize that it was all really happening. By the time I got back to my office, everyone was watching TV and the third plane was crashing into the Pentagon. After watching the horror unfold for pretty much the entire morning, the publisher sent everybody home early.
