Description:
BT wants to use WiMAX to help support a mobile service based on the technology, but needs a licence to proceed.
PIPEX has transferred its entire 3.6GHz UK spectrum license to PIPEX Wireless to deploy services based on WiMAX. Intel and PIPEX are the company's only shareholders. Pipex, set up in 1991, was the UK’s first commercial ISP and currently serves mostly business customers.
The other UK 3.5 GHz license holder is PCCW. Their UK Broadband is a wholly-owned subsidiary of PCCW, the largest telecoms provider in Hong Kong where their broadband service is provided to over 800,000 customers.
Other WiMAX or "pre-WiMAX" trials in the UK include Libera in London, Telabria in Kent, Pipex in Stratford and Brighton's Metranet.
