In August 2004, Clearwire launched its first broadband wireless network in Jacksonville, FL. The network, using NextNet technology, is a precursor to upcoming WiMAX networks. Clearwire hopes to move from their proprietary (but somewhat portable) system made by their subsidiary NextNet, to a standards-based system based on 802.16e.
In California they currently serve Merced CA, Modesto CA, Redding CA, Stockton CA.
Clearwire has secured $900M in financing led by Intel Capital and announced the sale of NextNet Wireless to Motorola. Intel and Motorola said the moves were part of an effort to expand the availability of WiMAX.
Clearwire has launched wireless high-speed Internet service in 27 metro markets, covering more than 200 cities and towns in Alaska, California, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Minnesota, Nevada, North Carolina, Oregon, Texas, Washington and Wisconsin in the United States.
Overseas, Clearwire has broadband wireless service in Ireland, Belgium, Denmark (under the Clearwire name with Danske Telecom) and Mexico (via partner MVSNet).
