Description:
India's VSNL (Tata Group), is using Aperto Networks WiMAX base stations, for the rollout of the carrier’s multi-service broadband wireless systems in over 65 cities across the country.
In a statement, VSNL said this is part of an initial deployment phase with the goal of growing the network to cover over 200 cities within twelve months.
Aperto has been working closely with VSNL since 2004 and has been involved in all phases of network design and deployment.
Aperto's PacketWAVE family of base stations and subscriber units are used. VSNL has deployed hundreds of sectors of the PacketWAVE series of products in the 3.3GHz - 3.4GHz band.
All of India's major carriers, Reliance, Bharti TeleVentures, VSNL and BSNL, have acquired licenses in 3.3GHz range and are in various stages of trials and modest commercial deployments.
However, shortage of spectrum is a serious obstacle. For WiMAX to prosper in India, license holders will need at least 20MHz of spectrum while they currently hold 12MHz or less. 20MHz is a minimum to support wide scale deployments and hence a profitable business case.
Government appears to be serious about solving the problem by releasing some of the spectrum from the departments of Space and Defense. Wireless adoption is essential if the government wishes to meet its ambitious plans
